This translation practice report focuses on the translation of the original English nonfiction Tomorrow Now: Envisioning the Next Fifty Years.Chapter 6(The Pantaloon)of the book is selected as the translation material. The translation practice is guided by the theoretical framework of Gideon Toury’s translation norms.Through analysis,it is concluded that the primary norm followed in the process of translation practice is acceptability and reader-friendly translation.Based on the developments at the dawn of the 21 st century,Tomorrow Now makes predictions about all aspects of society over the next 50 years. The book was published in 2002.After two decades, some predictions have already come true, but not all.The issues reflected in the book can be an enlightenment or even an alarm for the present.Ordinary readers,on the other hand, are able to obtain a novel experience by reading the book based on the fact that some realities described in the book are not exactly the case in the real world. In this thesis, the translation product is analyzed under the theoretical framework of Gideon Toury’s translation norms from three aspects, namely, initial norm, preliminary norm and operational norm. The thesis analyzes text selection, translation strategies and methods of the translation practice.Through analysis, the style of the original text tends to be colloquial.Considering the style of the original text and the reasons why the author chose to do so,acceptability is decided to be the initial norm of the translation practice. In the operation norm, translation methods include two aspects—matricial norms, which is about sentence structure, and textual-linguistic norms, which focuses on language selection.Addition and omission, sentence structure relocation, and text segmentation and merging are included in the analysis together with word selection, voice changes and the conversion of part of speech. On the basis of acceptability, the translation product is adjusted to better conform to the reading habits of Chinese readers while fully conveying the original meaning.
