| The group of 12 panels by Chinese artist Qi Baishi was sold for 931.5 million yuan or $144 million at auction in 2017,Beijing Poly International Auction,becoming the most expensive Chinese artwork worldwide.This set of ink-brush paintings are considered to be contrary to the painting style of Qi Baishi in 1925.Meanwhile,there are literature and pictures show the inconsistency with The group of 12 panels.Therefore it is determined to have questions about the authenticity of the painting.The paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter starts from the collection chain of The group of 12 panels,deduces the identity of "Zilin" based on the relationship between Chen Qiu and Chen Zilin,and then analyzes the description of The 12 panels.The second chapter analyzes the differences between the style of the painting and Qi Baishi’s representative works,and discusses the common themes from "pavilion","cottage","mighty river and surging waves","mountain rock","tree","full moon" and "lotus" that are normally used in his work.The third chapter discusses the calligraphy style and the renown "Qi Huang" from three aspects: the content of the poem and the identification of the seal.Then it will analyze and identify three fairly clear seals of "Muren","Baishiweng" and "Laoqilang" in the painting.At last,the conclusions are as follows.Firstly,it is found that the publicity of Beijing Poly International Auction Co.,ltd is inconsistent with the literature through discussion of Qi Baishi’s The group of 12 panels from multiple angles on its authenticity in the 2017 Beijing Poly Autumn Auction.Second,the style and technique of painting are widely divergent with that of Qi Baishi.Third,the calligraphy style and level of the preface and postscript on the lot are inconsistent with the style and level of the calligraphy of Qi Baishi in the 1920 s.Moreover,the three seals of "Muren","Baishiweng" and "Laoqilang" in the painting were not carved by Qi Baishi. |
