| Every learner must possess the four fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing when learning English. As a language input method,English reading plays a very important role throughout the senior high school students’ English learning process. The improvement of students’ reading skills helps to improve students’ English reading performance and stimulate students’ interest.Enhancing students’ reading skills is also beneficial to optimize their English reading ability through independent learning. However, traditional method of teaching English reading promotes output through a large number of inputs. With its low teaching efficiency, the rigidity of the traditional teaching model makes students lack of interest in learning English since they cannot effectively use reading strategies, students’ English reading scores is quite low, many of them do not even meet the requirements of compulsory English curriculum standards. Therefore,Professor Wen Qiufang put forward Production-Oriented Approach to solve the problem of“separation of learning and using” in Chinese current English reading teaching. This teaching approach aims to effectively improve the efficiency and quality of English reading teaching and promote the development of students’ comprehensive language application ability. So,this study uses empirical research based on the Production-Oriented Approach to investigate whether the Production-Oriented Approach is appropriate for teaching senior high school English reading, aiming to explore the effect of implementing the Production-Oriented Approach in an English reading course for senior high school students. In this study,106 students from two ordinary classes in Grade one of a senior high school in Guyuan City were selected as the subjects. The research instruments mainly used questionnaires, tests and interview. And SPSS25.0 were used to analyze the collected data. The following three questions are investigated in this study:(1)What effects may English reading teaching based on Production-Oriented Approach have on the senior high school students’ interest?(2)What effects may English reading teaching based on Production-Oriented Approach have on the senior high school students’ reading performance?(3)Does English reading teaching based on the Production-Oriented Approach have different effects on students of different English levels in senior high school and what are the respective effects? After a semester of English reading teaching experiment based on Production-Oriented Approach,The findings of this study are as follows: First, the Production-Oriented Approach to teaching English reading has a positive effect on enhancing students’ interest. In the English reading class based on Production-Oriented Approach, students’ classroom participation is increased, students will actively read English texts on their own and they will be confident in improving their English level.Second,English reading teaching based on the Production-Oriented Approach helped improve students’ reading performance. The average English reading score of students in the experimental class was 26.15 after the experiment, while the average score of the control class was 23.70,with a significant difference of 2.45 points between the two classes.Third, the Production-Oriented Approach to English reading teaching had the most significant effect on mid-level students and less on high and low-level students. The average reading scores of high, mid and low-level students increased by 1.0,4.08 and 2.26 respectively. The differences in reading interest and reading ability of mid-level students were more significant than those of high and low-level students after the experiment.According to the experience of teaching experiments and the results of data analysis,it was found that reading teaching based on the Production-Oriented Approach had a beneficial impact on readers’ interest and performance in senior high school, with the most significant effect on mid-level students in particular. Therefore,it is of positive significance to apply the Production-Oriented Approach to senior high school English reading class. |
