An important tendency of modernist novels is to describe and explore the spiritual dilemma of modern human beings. From Kafka,Malamud to Mac Leod,a large number of modern novelists adopted experimental and pioneering narrative techniques to successfully demonstrate the alienation phenomenon or materialization predicament of human beings in modern society, and represented the characters’ sense of loneliness, closure, fear,in a word, the sense of spiritual imprisonment. The human beings under the pen of these modernist writers,All the time wrapped in them, closed until suffocated.Today, with the advent of the contemporary mass media society and the digital age, when we read these works again, the suffering of the characters in the novels has a richer connotation and direction, because our own real feelings of loneliness and depression can still find their own projection in these novels. This thesis is divided into three chapters, consisting of introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction part mainly analyzes the occurrence and characteristics of the spiritual imprisonment novels. In the text part,Kafka,Malamud and Macleod’s novels are selected to interpret the text and analyze the characteristics and narrative methods of spiritual imprisonment displayed in the novels. In Kafka’s works, the constant transformation of the family power network makes people trapped in it.Language violence and communication difficulties also become important factors in Malamud’s works to show spiritual imprisonment, while in Macleod’s works, people’s spiritual plight is created in the society and the region itself. In the process of looking for their ancestors and hometown, they find that the deformed society and the real living environment become a net that traps them, and it is difficult to break free, and even finally become their real hometown. The second part of the text starts with the novel "Unhappy",discusses the sources and meanings of several spiritual difficulties in the novel, and finally analyzes how "Unhappy" uses the emotional novel as the carrier to show the emotional meaning of "unhappy" from the perspective of narrative aesthetics.
