| Intellectual narration is one of the most important literary phenomena of the 20 th century, and also is a prominent feature of Wang Yuewen’s novels. From the publication of his debut novel The Headless Story in the early 1990 s to his series of novels on officialdom at the turn of the century, and to his full-length novel Family Hill at the end of 2022,Wang Yuewen has always paid attention to the fate and situation of intellectuals in China’s modernization process.Constructed a unique genealogy of the image of intellectuals in terms of spiritual pursuit and survival status,he is expressing his sympathy for and criticism of the alienation of intellectuals’ personality, and conveying his call for the ideal personality of intellectuals. This thesis attempts to analyze the intellectuals of Wang Yuewen’s novels from three aspects: the intellectuals different value orientations, the complex of physical and mental situations, and the contradictory writing mentality,in order to explore the difficulties of survival and spiritual confusion. In his novels,Wang Yuewen portrays three different types of intellectuals: the sinkers, the trapped, and the rebels, who make very different value choices in the same existential context. The transformation of the times and the dump of power make the intellectuals from the ivory tower facing spiritual difficulties, which in turn prompt them to develop different personality types. Then Wang Yuewen’s narrative of intellectuals involves three main elements: power, love, and countryside. His novels focus on the situation of intellectuals who are torn between these three elements and have no spiritual support. The dumping of power has always put intellectuals in a double dilemma of spiritual anxiety and lack of faith. The lack of physical and mental placement and the uncontainable desire have put them in an emotional dilemma in the contradiction between desiring to imagine and returning to their families, and also made intellectuals lose their spiritual homeland forever.Wang Yuewen presents a contradictory state of mind between warmth and coldness in his narration of intellectuals. In the overall bleak tone of his creation,he strives to attack how the corrupt and cruel reality pushes human nature to the precipice, thus revealing the absurd power in reality. However,in his critical attitude,Wang also reveals his compassion, soothing himself and his readers with sincere ideals, and placing warm symbols in the "cold" tone of the text. This is the sincere and contradictory narrative mentality that the writer unconsciously reveals when writing about the alienated personalities of intellectuals. |
