Lin Yutang’s Beijing Writing Research

Beijing writing is both a writer’s experiential memory and an urban imagination.The paper takes Lin Yutang’s Beijing years and Beijing in his works as the research object,discusses the influence of the writer’s life experience on his feelings in Beijing and literature creation,the performance of the writer’s personal cognition,aesthetic concept and cultural in his works,and finally analyzes the value and significance of his Beijing writing to the society at that time and today.The first chapter discusses the important cultural activities and literature creations of the two Beijing years in chronological order.The period from 1916 to 1919 can be called the period of Lin Yutang’s cultural consciousness,he threw himself into the embrace of traditional Chinese culture,and under the influence of Ku Hung-ming and Liu Dajun,he entered the "pagan" world.The period from 1923 to 1926 was the period when Lin Yutang realized his personal cultural ideals.The future of sinology,dialect studies,translation practice,popular education,humorous style,essays,literati and politics are all keywords of this period.Lin Yutang has been left in literary movements,political events,and literary debates.These experiences,together with Beijing’s culture,folk activities,folk tales,cultural relics and monuments,have formed cultural resources and ideological concepts,and influenced Lin Yutang’s literary creation.The second chapter explains the face of Beijing under experience and imagination from the perspectives of landscape awareness,aesthetic taste,and concept of equality.Lin Yutang’s sense of scenery makes his Beijing like a "king’s dream",and these landscapes are intended to celebrate and criticize,foreshadow and enlighten.The aesthetic taste and modern consciousness formed under the influence of Chinese and Western cultures make Lin Yutang’s works full of traditional cultural atmosphere and modern spirit."Moment in Peking" corresponds to the plot development with the cultural meaning of the four seasons."Imperial Peking : Seven Centuries of China" analyzes Chinese art in a tasting way,and Beijing’s leisure and entertainment,professional identity,and external posture are all expressed in a state of equality and inclusiveness.The third chapter explores the value of Lin Yutang’s writing in Beijing.Lin Yutang broke the monopoly of Western discourse,represented China with Beijing,dissolved the malicious image of Beijing and China,and disclosed Japan’s wolf ambitions in his works to win the sympathy of Western countries in the War of Resistance Against Japan.Repeated writing of Beijing not only shows his identification and attachment to Chinese culture,but also is of great significance to the exchange and dissemination of Chinese culture,the maternal cultural identity of overseas Chinese,and the construction of a strong sense of Chinese national community.His writings of Beijing,which is deep,leisurely and comfortable,authentic and simple,and full of vitality,can also give some enlightenment to modern society and modern people who are addicted to material desires and survival anxiety.
