The modern girls’ school press is a unique lineage in the development of China’s paper media, rooted in the urgent need to "save the country and seek survival" and the historical context of "promoting women’s studies",nourished by the rapid flourishing of the modern newspaper medium, and concluded by the trend of women’s emancipation in China. In the history of the development of modern girls’ schools and the evolution of the modern press, the modern girls’ school press has not only left traces in the history of the press, but also has historical documentary value and potential for further exploration. As modern newspaper literature and modern women’s literature have gradually become academic hotspots, the collation of modern women’s school newspapers has also entered the research horizon, becoming one of the directions for the study of newspaper literature and women’s literature. However, due to the fact that the materials of modern girls’ school newspapers are complicated and fragmented, scattered and lost,as well as the fact that they are related to the field of modern women’s education, the research on modern girls’ school newspapers has been conducted mostly from the perspective of history or education, and there are fewer literary studies and research specifically focusing on the literary literature created by female students in modern girls’ school newspapers. In this study,12 modern women’s school newspapers and periodicals, including Jing Hua,Huixing Women’s School Newspaper,Women Students,Women Students’ Magazine,Wuxi Jingzhi Women’s School Magazine,Zhuyin Women’s School Magazine,Jiangsu No.2 Women’s Normal School Alumni Association Journal(once called Jiangsu No.2 Women’s Normal School Journal),Zhili No.1 Women’s Normal School Alumni Association Newspaper,Jiangsu No.1 Women’s Normal School Alumni Association Journal, and Jiangsu No.1 Women’s Normal School Alumni Association Journal. The Journal of the Alumni Association of the First Women’s Normal School in Jiangsu Province, the Journal of the Alumni Association of the First Women’s Higher Primary School in Chengnan,Nanhui County, the Journal of the Literary Association of the Beijing Women’s Higher Normal School, and the Journal of the Alumni Association of the Zhejiang Women’s Normal School are the subjects of this study, and the literary texts written by female students are collated in an attempt to bring neglected historical documents into the field of view,so as to build a picture of female students’ writing, with the modern female school press as the centre. This is an attempt to bring historical documents into the field of view,so as to construct a picture of female students’ writing centred on the modern girls’ school press. The number of poems, essays and novels written by female students in the modern girls’ school press is an important literary attempt to broaden the content of traditional Chinese female writing, and even presents the "May Fourth" literary "female writers" of the new literature."The thesis is a detailed examination of the "pre-historic" significance of the female writers of the new literature, and is able to establish a close correlation and reflection between the modern girls’ school press and the subsequent literary development. The thesis provides a detailed overview of the modern girls’ school press in general and the literary output of female students, producing a list of modern Chinese girls’ school presses and a table of female students’ works published in modern girls’ school presses,in an effort to be clear and concise. The thesis focuses on the literary works written by female students, who not only became an important symbol of women’s physical emancipation, but also provided a realistic basis for women to broaden their writing subjects.Female students incorporated the life of a girls’ school into their literary work, writing letters and poems about the joys of studying at school and advising each other to pursue their studies, and celebrating the pure and precious friendship between fellow students.Taking advantage of the recent development of off-campus visits to the girls’ schools, the girls’ school took the opportunity to get out of school and explore the mountains and rivers, and travel literature occupied many pages of the girls’ school newspaper in a lively and fresh manner. They were not only concerned with the landscape, but also with the times, commenting on current affairs and politics in polemics, participating in the new cultural movement with vernacular writing and new poetry, and thinking about the question of ’man’ with their fledgling novels. As the modern era draws to a close, the literary works of female students are gradually revealing their relevance to the May Fourth Movement and their historical significance. As a whole, the literary works published by female students in the girls’ school press are characterised by a focus on building a better image of themselves and a growing sense of femininity, revealing a unique female student ethos to the world. |
