| China’s more than five thousand years’ history has bred its unique ideological and cultural systems, forming the corresponding concepts, which have the characteristics of being abstract,history-related and context-dependent.The accurate and authentic translation of them can help better tell China’s stories, make the voice of China heard and shape a good national image of China.Although great achievements have been made in the study of the translation practice of the Chinese cultural concepts since the launch of the Project “Key Concepts in Chinese Thought and Culture: Communication Through Translation” in 2014,few studies have been conducted to combine the practice with relevant translation theories, which provides broad space for the research.Promoting Chinese culture to go global is the most important purpose of the English translation of the key concepts in Chinese thought and culture. Therefore,it requires the translator to give consideration to extra-linguistic factors in translation, such as the translation purpose and the target readers’ acceptance,on the basis of respecting the original text.It is precisely what Vermeer’ Skopos Theory focuses on.Accordingly, this thesis adopts the three rules of Skopos Theory, namely,Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule,as theoretical guidance. After analyzing the features of the key concepts in Chinese thought and culture, this thesis makes a research on the translation of some typical cases in Key Concepts in Chinese Thought and Culture(Volumes 1-9)to explore how Skopos Theory effectively guides the translation of the key concepts and how extra-linguistic factors, such as the translation purpose, the translator and the addressee, affect the translation of these concepts, based on which summary is made of the strategies and methods for the translation of the key concepts in Chinese thought and culture: literal translation, free translation, contextual adaptation, borrowing and so on.It is hoped that this research can provide theoretical support for the English translation practice of the key concepts in Chinese thought and culture and make a contribution to the international communication of traditional Chinese culture. |
