The Children’s Play is written by the 16th-century Nederland painter Peter Bruegel. It contains nearly 80 kinds of games, which can be described as being "an encyclopedia of children’s games" and a precious visual literature of great historical archival value. In the early 16 th century,Netherland was influenced by the humanistic trend of the Italian Renaissance, and he began to be people-oriented,especially eliminating the past "reduced version" of children as adults. In this work,Bruegel focuses on the theme of childhood, and in previous art history, the theme of childhood was usually expressed through classical mythology and formal portraits, and the study of the work has great significance. However,by only focusing on the "joy and peace" on the surface of the work, without combining the time background and the artist’s creative logic to dig into the implied "irony" core in the work, the understanding of the work will become more superficial.Bruegel has the title of "peasant painter" because most of his works depict the image of peasants at the bottom of the society. In fact, most art historians who love Bruegel painting confirmed that "he is a wise man who hides himself under the plain and humorous appearance, and he conveys his care for the world with painting." At the same time,he also well inherited the mantle of Hilloney Musbose, his spicy satirical painting techniques and his metaphorical criticism of social reality. In the16 th century,Needland was deeply subjected to Protestant and Catholic religious conflicts, and Spanish colonial rule and high-pressure exploitation,Bruegel lived in such turbulent times, expressing his own personal images, and he used to use local folk sayings to satirize some of human behavior. The author will systematically explain the metaphorical expression and the visual language characteristics of the work on the time background and cultural background when he created the work.In addition,Bruegel’s work "Children’s Play" will be systematically explained through image research method, literature research method, religious study and other methods. This paper is divided into the following five parts:The first part is the introduction, which summarizes the background of the topic research and the current situation of the research at home and abroad, the main principles of iconology research, and the significance of metaphorical expression in the work. The first chapter analyzes the creation background of Children’s Play, which is divided into three levels: political background, cultural background and crisis brought by commercial development. The second chapter specifically analyzes the visual language characteristics of Children’s Play, including the composition of high viewpoint, the clever use of color, and the modeling analysis with children as the main body. The third chapter focuses on the metaphorical expression behind the images of Children’s Play, and makes an in-depth analysis of the metaphor in the composition and layout, the metaphor in the symbols in the images, and the metaphor in the game content. The fourth chapter discusses personal works of art with children’s play as the theme.
