| Leo Steinberg was a 20 th century American modern and contemporary art critic,a historian of Renaissance art,and a distinguished scholar in the field of iconography.Almost every year in western art history,there are a large number of works published on Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper,with different perspectives and focuses.They are either the work of an orthodox iconologist or an authority in the art history.In this context,it seems,any illustration of the Last Supper would be eclipsed.However,Steinberg changed this situation.He absorbed the methodology of orthodox iconology,phenomenology and psychoanalysis,combined visual observation,self-imagination and theological texts,and reshaped the cognition of the last Supper by the general public and the study of art history.In the process of the illustration of the Last Supper,Steinberg projected his personal experience and self-imagination into the interpretation of the meaning of the image.Although it has attracted much criticism,his writing also reflects a distinct style of “perception” and “imagination”,which is different from the orthodox study of art history.Steinberg believes that images always have more complex meanings than texts,that images are the “openings” of meaning,that the interpretation of images should not be limited to a single,closed unit of meaning,and images are not completely attached to texts.This concept also runs through Steinberg’s writing.This paper is based on Steinberg’s image analysis of Da Vinci’s Last Supper,and puts his theoretical method into the background of art history.At the same time,this paper also combines a large number of research literature of art historians to analyze Steinberg’s image analysis methods from a comparative perspective,and make a certain value judgment on steinberg’s research methods,so as to complete the overall review of Steinberg’s image research methods. |
