Childhood is the most critical period for the formation of a person’s personality in their entire life. The growth of children is related to the future of a country and nation. The issue of children’s education has become a hot topic in this era,and in recent years, films on the subject of children’s education have emerged one after another.Since the first children’s documentary was born in 1958,in the following decades, documentaries on children’s subjects have emerged one after another.Until Zhang Yiqing’s“Kindergarten” won the Grand Prize at the Shanghai International Television Festival, the image recording of children’s subjects has shown a state of white-hot,and more and more scholars have invested in the research of children’s documentaries, leaving a wealth of theoretical materials that can be used for reference. The graduation work children’s education documentary “Gymnasium” is created in combination with narrative theory. This article is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction section, which mainly explains the research background, significance, review, innovation points, and research methods. The second chapter analyzes the graduation work“Gymnasium” from a narrative perspective, establishing a complete narrative understanding of “Gymnasium” from a diverse perspective of omniscient, internal, and external perspectives. The third chapter uses the theory of narrative time to explain the work, and through the use of narrative time, presents readers with a deeper level of thematic meaning in the work. The fourth chapter comprehensively interprets the different behaviors triggered by different characters’ personalities in “Gymnasium” based on the level of character shaping, and elaborates on how to draw on the character theory of narratology to consciously shape characters. The fifth chapter discusses how to use narrator intervention to influence the meaning of the film, and explores the director’s strategies for expressing “rational intervention”and“subjective ideology”during the filming process.Chapter sixth summarizes and reflects on the problems encountered during the creation process of the work.
