An Action Research On The 5E Teaching Model In Junior High English Reading Teaching From The Perspective Of Key Competencies

Abstract/Summary:
Key English disciplinary competencies include language ability,learning ability,thinking quality,and cultural awareness.Reading ability is included in language ability,while learning ability includes reading strategy.However,there are problems with traditional English reading teaching.Students’ key English disciplinary competencies have not been well developed,mainly in the areas of language ability and learning ability.The 5E teaching model,which includes engagement,exploration,explanation,elaboration and evaluation,as a new demand for teaching,can well solve the problems existing in traditional teaching.This study uses the 5E teaching model from the perspective of key competencies to address the current problems in junior high English reading teaching and to further improve students’ language ability and learning ability.The research questions are:(1)What are the effects of the 5E teaching model on junior high school students’ English reading ability from the perspective of key competencies?(2)What are the effects of the 5E teaching model on junior high school students’ English reading strategy from the perspective of key competencies?This study is a three-month action research conducted with 50 students from Grade 8 of Shenyang No.43 Middle School.The author has based the research design on the framework of language ability and learning ability from the perspective of key competencies and the five stages in the 5E teaching model.The study mainly uses questionnaires,tests,interviews and reflective journals to collect data related to changes in students’ English reading ability and reading strategy from the perspective of key competencies,and the collected data are analyzed through SPSS 26.0.The research results show that : firstly,the 5E teaching model from the perspective of key competencies has a positive effect on the improvement of junior high school students’ English reading ability.This is mainly reflected in the improvement of students’ correctness in general idea and inference questions;secondly,the 5E teaching model from the perspective of key competencies has a facilitating effect on junior high students’ mastery of English reading strategy,especially reading emotional strategy and reading social strategy.The significance of this study is that by implementing the5 E teaching model of junior high English reading instruction from the perspective of key competencies,students’ reading ability and mastery of reading strategy can be effectively improved,thereby enhancing their key English disciplinary competencies.
