COVID-19 documentaries were born in a unique historical context and have presented distinct creative phenomena and perspectives.Compared to documentaries of other genres, they contain denser points of empathy, and their audio-visual representations are more empathetically engaging.Their empathetic communication pathways are complete and unfragmented. This paper mainly studies representative domestic COVID-19 documentaries, using empathy theory, empathy communication theory, and documentary narrative theory to explore related issues of empathetic communication in COVID-19 documentaries. The analysis focuses on three aspects: their horizontal audio-visual representations, empathetic communication pathways, and the effects of empathetic communication.Chapter One primarily sorts out valuable theories on empathy, empathetic communication, and documentary narrative.Chapter Two largely categorizes and summarizes audio-visual representations filled with empathy, starting from fragmented elements and finding corresponding content in the research samples.Firstly,it explores lens, light, and color to summarize how COVID-19 documentaries can construct empathetic scenes, using visual rhetoric and visual imagery theory to analyze how sensory, physical, and scenic images are combined to convey empathy.Secondly,it delves into synchronous sounds, commentary, and music effects to identify elements that create empathetic situations.Thirdly,it discusses ways to match empathetic rhythms based on time compression and expansion.Lastly,it delves into different relationships from homes, hospitals, and communities to clarify spatial elements that can expand the field of empathy.Chapter Three analyzes the path of empathetic communication in COVID-19 documentaries in four parts.First,it summarizes three types of topics that shape events based on interactive data, mainly through the use of Weibo and Tik Tok for marketing: initial, derivative, and extended topics.Second,it discovers how COVID-19 documentaries can stimulate empathy narratively, choosing a civilian approach in perspective and characters, and stimulating reflective awareness through introductory questions.Third,it constructs diverse, compound, and unique participatory mobilization methods through high emotional energy transmission, tragic narratives, public co-creation.Finally,Chapter Four begins by proposing a framework for analyzing the communication effects of emotional empathy and cognitive empathy in COVID-19 documentaries and a corresponding chart for examining the effects of empathetic communication and documentary communication elements. Then,by crawling data from comments and bullet screen comments on COVID-19 documentaries, listing significant text content, and combining with content related to the wheel of emotions,it summarizes the overall empathetic tendencies of COVID-19 documentaries and verifies their empathetic effects, deepening the effect check with interviews. From this,it identifies four problems: narratives of suffering causing secondary trauma,over-dramatized hero narratives leading to excessive emotional rendering, empathetic bias caused by combative decoding, and incomplete narratives potentially leading to unfinished empathy. It also provides some feasible optimization suggestions.COVID-19 documentaries hold a unique role in leveraging aesthetics to stir emotions, gently soothe panic and anxiety, and guide viewers. Therefore, they exhibit unparalleled empathetic effectiveness in the process of empathetic communication. However, there are still certain issues at different stages and levels of empathetic communication in COVID-19 documentaries. Therefore,a deep investigation into the empathetic communication content of COVID-19 documentaries is not only beneficial for the continuous output of high-quality works with strong empathy but can also enhance the audience’s acceptance of them. Thus, this paper, starting from the perspective of empathetic communication, deeply investigates the relevant content and issues, providing standards and guidance for the production of similar types of documentaries in the future. |
