| Dreams are the product of the unconscious mind in the state of sleep. They are not meaningless;they compensate for the emotional deficiencies of reality in an unconscious way and enrich the spiritual world of human beings. The human exploration of the unconscious began with Freud and advanced to Jung’s milestone. In the process of confronting the unconscious,Jung discovered the deeper "collective unconscious" in addition to the "individual unconscious" and proposed the core concept of "archetype".The study of Jung’s dream theory is based on the theoretical research of "collective unconscious" and the theoretical investigation of Jungian psychological theories such as complex, archetypes and symbols, etc. On this basis, from the perspective of literature and aesthetics,we use Jung’s dream theory to conduct an in-depth study of literary creation and aesthetic forms. The object and purpose of this paper is to investigate the dream theory based on Jung’s theory of collective unconscious psychology in the context of literature and aesthetics, and to use Jung’s dream theory to solve several problems in literature and aesthetics, such as the creation and reception of dream literature, the textual form and presentation of dream literature, and the aesthetic consciousness and form of dreams. The first part of the dissertation intends to conduct a research-based tracing of the idea of dreams and the collective unconscious, providing the prerequisites for an inquiry into Jung’s dream theory from literary and aesthetic perspectives. The first section of this chapter provides an overview of the holistic study of dream ontology.Firstly, the nature of dreams and their relationship with the unconscious mind will be introduced;secondly, the mechanism of dream production and narration will be discussed;finally, the aesthetic nature of dreams will be studied from the literary and aesthetic perspectives, focusing on the aesthetic function of dreams;the second section of this chapter is a review of the research on the idea of collective unconscious in dreams. The second section of this chapter reviews the development of the collective unconscious, from Freud’s discovery of the unconscious mind to Jung’s idea of the collective unconscious, and compares Freud’s and Jung’s ideas about the unconscious. At the same time, the results of Freud’s research on dream theory are introduced. The second part of the dissertation is an analysis of Jung’s dream theory, which is the key part of the dissertation,i.e.,an in-depth study of the dream theory based on Jung’s analytical psychology. This part mainly focuses on the theoretical analysis of dreams, through the four aspects of dream generation mechanism, dream content reflection, dream presentation form, and dream effect function,to criticize and analyze Jung’s psychological theory,in order to outline the dream theory based on Jung’s collective unconscious. The first section of this chapter will deal with the generation of dreams.By examining the concept of complexes in Jungian psychology, the main purpose is to explore the influence of complexes on dream generation under the unification of the collective unconscious;the second section intends to analyze the content of dreams,i.e.,the archetypal theory.Taking dreams as the premise basis, the study focuses on the generation and division of the four typical Jungian archetypes(anima or animus, wise old man, shadow, and selfhood),their inner connection and difference, etc. The third section is a study of the symbolic presentation form of dreams. It is reciprocal with the archetypal content of dreams in the second section. The symbol is the external presentation of the archetype, and the archetype is the internal meaning of the symbol;the fourth section is a discussion of the compensatory effect of dreams and its function. The compensatory effect of dreams is reflected in the function of oppositional transformation and transcendental integration in dreams, and the functions and effects of dreams are theoretically analyzed from literary and aesthetic perspectives to show the important role of dreams in the formation of personal growth,i.e."selfhood".The third part of the thesis is a study of Jung’s dream theory and theories of literary creation and aesthetic forms,i.e.,the application of Jung’s dream theory to solve the problems of literary creation and reception, text form and presentation, and the aesthetic consciousness and form of dreams, which is the core part of the thesis. The first section is an analysis of the feasibility of theoretical practice,i.e.,an account of the operability of using Jungian psychological theory to analyze literary practice.Based on academic history research, this section will point out two paths of dream theory and literary research based on the analysis and overview of existing theoretical research results in China;the second and third sections of this chapter focus closely on the practice of literary creation and continue the two major research paths to explore Jung’s dream theory. The second section of this chapter will explore the relationship between dreams as a literary creation method and the psychological motivation of the creator and the aesthetic feeling of the connoisseur from the perspective of literary psychology and the theory of dream complex and compensation;the third section of this chapter will explore the issues of the hierarchical configuration of dreams, the use of symbols, and the turn of research on dream literature from the perspective of literary narrative and the theory of dream archetypes and symbols. The fourth section of this chapter analyzes the aesthetic consciousness and aesthetic forms of dream literature from the perspective of aesthetics. It analyzes the aesthetic value and relevance of dreams as a visualization vehicle for the realization of "Tao" and "self-nature" by combining Chinese and Western dream theories and starting from the dichotomy and unity of aesthetics. The focus of this paper is to sort out, analyze and critically assimilate Jung’s theory.Jung did not have an explicit dream theory, but his ideas of collective unconscious, archetypal theory, complex theory and symbolic theory can be theoretically interdicted with dream theory. At the same time, there are relatively few theoretical researches about dreams, and they are more concentrated in the field of psychology, which will make it difficult to apply Jung’s dream theory to solve the problems of literature and aesthetics. However,Jung’s theoretical system can confirm the self-consistency of his dream theory, and Freud’s dream theory and the existing research results of domestic and foreign scholars can also provide theoretical support for using Jung’s dream theory to study literary and aesthetic problems. |
