Viola da Gamba Sonata No.1 in G major(BWV1027)is the work of Johann Sebastian Bach(1685-1750),a renowned Baroque composer,and is one of the most popular repertoires for viola and cello in concerts.This paper compares and analyzes the difference between the viola da gamba version by B(?)renreiter-Verlag(edited by Hans Eppstein,Urtext,1987)and the viola version by Edition Peters(arranged for viola by Watson Forbes,1951),and studies the methodology of playing of the viola version of the work.The first chapter reviews Bach’s life,background,and structure of his works.In the second chapter,th-e characteristics of viola da gamba and viola are explained and compared.In the third chapter,the score of viola da gamba of the work is compared with that of viola,the methodology of playing the viola version is explored,and the performance traits of the Baroque era is investigated.The following research allows performers to further comprehend the respective purposes of the composer Bach and the arranger and demonstrate the understandings in their performances.
