Bohuslav Martinu(1890-1959)is one of the most representative and influential composers in Czech in the mid-20th century.His music works are filled with diversity and originality,combining the vastly different elements of music.Baroque styles are flexibly incorporated into the characteristic folk music,such as neoclassicism,Bohemia and jazz.Furthermore,his modern composing skills are perfectly integrated with the features of Czechic folk music.This piece of music is performed in the author’s solo concert during his postgraduate learning.Hence,the thesis intends to analyze and elaborate on the performance of Martinu’s First Sonata based on the author’s experience as a flute performer.It is the only flute sonata by Martinu,which is also his instrumental music creation with mature styles.As a representative composer in the period of neo-classicism,Martinu not only demonstrated the preciseness and refinement of classicism in music texture and arrangement,but manifested the originality creativity and innovation of the 20th-century music in his musical thoughts.This thesis takes Martinu’s First Sonata as the object of research and offers an introduction of the composer’s experience and background of music creation.Based on the overview of the genres and styles of his music music in different periods,the thesis focuses on illustrating the music structures and creation techniques and analyzing the ideas,music styles and ethnic characteristics in the neoclassical period.The purpose is to conduct a thorough study on this music piece itself and demonstrate its important role in flute performance.
