Korean suspense films not only stand out among the local genre, but are also unique among the world’s suspense films, forming a unique style that combines suspense and "hate" culture. On the contrary, there is a huge market for the suspense genre in China, and many quality suspense films have emerged in recent years, but domestic suspense films have not been able to develop a unique mode of creation as Korean suspense films have. This study argues that audiences are actively involved in the understanding and construction of stories based on their own cognitive experiences, and can even further borrow the connotations of films to express their personal or collective will.Based on cultural affinities and similarities, the paper further focuses on the localised and nationalised narrative characteristics of Korean suspense films and the perceptions and feedback of Chinese audiences. The second chapter defines the concept of the research object, compares its development and selects the objects for close reading. The third chapter summarises how Korean suspense films integrate the suspense genre and "hate" culture in terms of plot narrative formula and style. The fourth chapter is based on word frequency analysis and textual analysis of Chinese audiences’ comments and questionnaires to verify the success of its narrative mode and its applicability to Chinese suspense films through Chinese audiences’ perception and feedback. The study found that Korean suspense films have largely absorbed European modern cinema in terms of plot and stylistic systems, placing emphasis on the expression of social reality and national emotions in their cinematography. However, the creators of the films are actively exploring formalistic innovations, fusing strong "hate" emotions with genre elements and integrating them with commercial consumer elements such as violence and gore, hiding local social issues under the genre narratives. From the analysis of Chinese audiences’ commentary and word frequency,it can be verified that the unique narrative characteristics of Korean suspense films can be understood and recognised by Chinese audiences to a certain extent due to their cultural affinity with China, but this requires a high level of director’s narrative skills and ability to lay down emotions, and some Chinese audiences have also given negative feedback on the shortcomings of Korean suspense films such as extreme gore and violence, excessive sensationalism and slow narrative pace. The film has also received negative feedback from some Chinese audiences about the extreme gore and violence, excessive sensationalism and slow narrative pace of Korean suspense films. |
