Social adaptation refers to the process in which individuals,as the basic components of society, gradually adapt to the recognized social ethics, life rules and behavior patterns. The social adaptability of adolescents may be related to the communication between parents and children due to their constant socialization during their growth. However, the conflict of parent-child values is an issue that contemporary parents have to face, which may be detrimental to the development of adolescents’ social adaptability. Therefore, this study will explore the possible impact of parent-child values conflict on adolescents’ social adaptation, and further reveal its mechanism. In study 1,152 students and their parents from a middle school in Zhejiang Province were tested by using the Rocky’s Ultimate Values Scale and the Middle School Students’ Behavior Self Test Questionnaire as tools to explore the relationship between adolescent social adaptation and parent-child values conflict. The results showed that comfortable life, happy and harmonious family atmosphere, and self-identity were considered as the most important values by young people; The order of importance of their values is not consistent with that of their parents. It was further found that the conflict of parent-child values was significantly negatively correlated with the dimensions of dealing with peer relations, obedience skills, and willingness to express in adolescents’ social adaptation. The results show that adolescent parent-child values conflict has a significant negative impact on social adaptation.Study 2 further used the interview method to explain how adolescent parent-child values conflict affected social adaptation. The result shows that the conflict of parentchild values causes students to think more frequently about the meaning in life, thus affecting students’ social adaptation. The more serious the value conflict between parents and children is,the more bound students feel, and the more inclined they are to have a lower sense of life meaning, which affects students’ social adaptation level.Based on the results of study 2,study 3 added the meaning in life questionnaire to the tool of study 1,and conducted a questionnaire survey on 807 students and their parents in two other middle schools in Zhejiang Province,so as to explore the relationship between parent-child values conflict, social adaptation and meaning in life. The results showed that the conflict of parent-child values was negatively correlated with the level of social adaptation; The score of sense of life is negatively correlated with the conflict of parent-child values, while the score of sense of life is positively correlated with the level of social adaptation and its sub dimensions. It further shows that the meaning in life plays a mediating role in the relationship between adolescent parent-child values conflict and social adaptation. This paper mainly finds that there is a significant negative correlation between parent-child values conflict and social adaptation, and it also finds that the sense of life plays a completely intermediary role in the expression willingness of parent-child values conflict in social adaptation. From this,we can draw the following conclusions:under the influence of parent-child values conflict, the basic psychological needs of adolescents are in an unsatisfied state,so they experience a low meaning in life.On the contrary, the meaning of life,as an important stress response resource, can reduce the impact of stress on individual psychology, trigger individual positive response under pressure, help to increase the positive emotional experience of young people, improve their sense of self-efficacy,and enhance their self-control ability, which is conducive to further improving the level of social adaptation of young people.
