This thesis analyzes the symphonic sound construction of the Chinese Orchestra from the perspective of a conductor. In particular, the author selects the bowed-string group and the plucked-string group, the two most important fundamental sections of a Chinese Orchestra,as the research object and targeted at discussing issues of vertical sound blending and horizontal timbre design. In Chapter 2,the discussion of the sound blending starts with instrument features and their corresponding impact on blending. Then, strong emphasis is put on both the blending of bowed-string group and the sound integration of the bowed-string group and the plucked-string group. In Chapter 3,this thesis selects two representative works,"Fantasia: The Terra-Cotta Warriors" and "The Desert Smoke"(the 4th Movement: Dirge),to explore central issues in horizontal timbre design, including how to build the music image in accordance with the composer’s intention, and how to design the holistic timbre to present the structure of the work.In both two chapters, this thesis tries to stand on the shoes of the conductor so as to analyze the importance of a conductor’s rehearsal techniques and conducting techniques in sound construction. Finally, through the reference of aesthetic characteristics of traditional Chinese music, this thesis discusses from three angles about what’s the key objective the conductor should bear in mind when leading the orchestra to attain better acoustics – to better promote the aesthetic pursuit of traditional Chinese music through the performance of Chinese Orchestra. |
