English reading teaching is an important part of English teaching and the effectiveness of English reading teaching is directly related to the quality of English teaching.The author carried out a preliminary investigation during the teaching internship in many middle schools in Wanzhou District,and found that the current English reading teaching was mainly based on the teacher’s explanation,which failed to stimulate students’ reading interest,the teaching effect was not satisfied,and students’ reading efficiency was low.However,due to the lack of experience and their shallow theoretical cognition of English teaching,novice teachers face many challenges in English reading teaching.Therefore,the author believes that it is necessary to carry out a survey on the teaching methods of English reading for junior English novice teachers to understand the current situation of English reading teaching and find out its problems,and explore some appropriate teaching methods to improve the effect of teaching reading.Based on the above background,the author conducted a survey on the teaching methods of English reading classes for novice English teachers in six middle schools in Wanzhou District.The research was mainly conducted through teacher-student questionnaire surveys,teacher interviews and classroom observations.This study mainly discusses the following three questions: First,what are the teaching methods commonly used by junior middle school English novice teachers in English reading classes? Second,what are the factors that affect the choice of English reading teaching methods for junior English novice teachers? Third,how to improve junior high school English novice teachers English reading teaching methods?The conclusions of this study are as follows: Firstly,generally speaking,the English reading teaching methods commonly used by junior high school English novice teachers include: grammar translation method accounting for 25.2%,situational teaching method and problem teaching method accounting for 21.6%,task-based language teaching method accounting for 19.8%,and communicative teaching method accounting for 11.7%.It can be seen from the survey results that the teacher-centered grammar-translation method still dominates,and the reading teaching is mainly based on teachers’ explanation,while the communicative teaching method is the least used.Secondly,the application of English reading teaching methods for junior high school English novice teachers is influenced by both subjective and objective factors.Subjective factors include teachers’ teaching experience,teachers’ own characteristics,students’ suggestions and so on;Objective factors include teaching objectives,students’ English foundation,the difficulty of teaching content and so on.According to the above survey results,the author puts forward relevant teaching suggestions to promote junior middle school English novice teachers to reasonably choose and use English reading teaching methods,such as teachers should choose teaching methods based on learning situation analysis,teachers should choose teaching methods based on teaching content,etc.Teachers must also pay attention to the cultivation of students’ emotion,interest,self-achievement,self-confidence and other non-intellectual factors while choosing teaching methods.By means of questionnaire survey,teacher interview and classroom observation,this study investigated the current situation and influencing factors of English reading teaching methods for novice English teachers in middle schools in Wanzhou District,and put forward relevant teaching suggestions,hoping that this study could provide certain reference significance for novice English teachers in middle schools to better carry out English reading teaching.
