Unit Integrated Instruction has aroused strong repercussions in the field of primary education,and it has become a major topic of research in the area of primary school English teaching.Teachers and researchers in the primary education have long been devoted to the research and practice of Unit Integrated Instruction.As to the course of EFL teaching,The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)advocates the concept of Activity-based Approach and tries to put it into the practices of learning English,which highlights that the activities should be viewed as the fundamental form of English learning.Meanwhile,this approach stresses teachers’ efforts to extract the thematic meaning of teaching materials and hence to develop the core competences of students.However,in the field of primary education,comparatively few studies have applied Activity-based Approach as a theoretical framework to perform Unit Integrated Instruction.Therefore,what the marriage of these two teaching concepts could bring forth is still unclear.This study adopts the method of questionnaires,interviews and tests.On the basis of having a clear understanding of some key definitions and theories,the author carries out a study of Unit Integrated Instruction in primary school in the context of Activity-based Approach in learning English.Three questions below are hence to be answered when the whole research is completed:1.How do English teachers in primary schools recognize the correlation between Unit Integrated Instruction and Activity-based Approach in learning English?2.How can English teachers in primary education design and implement the Unit Integrated Instruction in the context of Activity-based Approach in learning English?3.What effects does Unit Integrated Instruction in the context of Activity-based Approach in learning English have on students’ learning performance in primary school?After the collection and analysis of the data,the major findings are as following:1.Primary school English teachers are familiar with Unit Integrated Instruction and they are willing to use this teaching approach in their daily classroom teaching.However,they know less about the concept of Activity-based Approach in learning English.And their understandings of the correlation between the two teaching concepts above needs to be deepened.2.Based on the relevant literature studies and our common teaching practices,this thesis summarizes the steps of designing and supplementing Unit Integrated Instruction in the context of Activity-based Approach in learning English,including extracting the unit theme,integrating the teaching content,formulating the unit teaching objectives and designing progressive classroom activities.3.Unit Integrated Instruction in the context of Activity-based Approach in learning English can effectively improve primary school students’ learning performance.In addition,based on the research findings,the present thesis provides some pedagogical implications and suggestions to English teachers in primary education.The author hopes that our research findings could be beneficial to the future reflections in this field,i.e.Unit Integrated Instruction in the context of Activity-based Approach in learning English. |
