In recent years, the upsurge of African literature awards has shown its charming charm and aroused a large number of scholars at home and abroad to devote themselves to research. The academic works and other research materials related to African literature in English are very popular in the world, which shows the importance of the translation of domestic academic works on the history of African literature. This report selected the fifth chapter of A Study of the Progress of Botswana Literature in English as the translation material, which mainly narrates the historical evolution process of Botswana’s popular literature since the 21st century. While elaborating the representative writers’ creative experience, the source text also takes the appreciation of the works into account.A Study of the Progress of Botswana Literature in English is a phased achievement in the study of English literature in Africa, compiled and translated by Professor Zhu Zhenwu’s team. This book is not only to write the history of English literature in Botswana, but also to build a bridge of cultural communication between China and Botswana, and to provide a carrier for the realization of mutual learning between Chinese and African civilizations. From the perspective of realizing the communicative intention of translating literary history into foreign languages, this paper discusses the translation strategies and methods of literary history texts, providing reference and ideas for promotion of academic exchanges and dialogues between China and foreign countries.Translation is a process in which comprehension, expression and adaptation are interwoven and mutually reinforcing.Translation,as the main means of cross-cultural communication, requires the translator to be faithful to the original text, and the realization of the original author’s communicative intention in the process of translation is the primary task of faithful translator.Communicative intention is realized through the translator’s acquisition and transmission of the original author’s informative intention. The former requires the translator to accurately understand the original author’s informative intention, while the latter requires the translator to transmit the author’s informational intention through reasonable expression and adaptation. This translation practice report mainly employs text analysis and comparison to analyze and study the original text, the translator’s translation and the final version.Through the analysis, the author finds that the original text is highly academic, literary and practical, while the complicated background knowledge and jumping information hinder the translator’s comprehension of the original text.Secondly, due to the obvious language differences between Chinese and English, the accurate transmission of the author’s information intention requires the non-native English translator to have excellent English written expression ability in order to achieve the purpose of bridging the language differences and transmitting the original author’s information intention.Thirdly,in order to better convey the information intention of the original author, the translator needs to fully consider the reading experience of the bilingual readers through the psychological experience of cultural empathy, and make appropriate adaptations in translation.Through the demonstration and analysis of the cases, the report summarizes three strategies for realizing communication intention: the comprehension strategies of literary history translation(contextual combination, textual logic combing, relevant expert consulting),the expression strategy of literary history translation(smooth flow of information elements, correct wording for Accuracy,back-translation to retain original meaning and natural cohesion for influence)and the adaption strategy of literary history translation(additional annotation for better information transmission and foreignization of the culture-loaded words to improve communication effect). At the end of the report,it also summarizes the experience and feelings in the process of translation operation and the ability as well as accomplishment that translators should possess and look forward to,hoping to provide reference experience for future translation work and related translation practitioners.
