France’s particular history and film culture have created the basis for the study of French cinema on the subject of World War II.Firstly,France’s history of occupation in WWII has given rise to tendencies such as resistanceism and collaborationism,as well as anti-Semitism and nationalism, and the French film culture has given rise to a tradition of film criticism and the intersection of politics and cinema. This study attempts to clarify the development of French WWII cinema and the reasons behind it,and to explore the relationship between history, memory and video writing in the context of film texts,film-related critical texts and French history as a whole. The first part of the study analyses French WWII films from various periods against their historical background in a general way, providing a comprehensive chronological picture of the evolution of French WWII cinema. The second part examines two typical films as examples, digging deeper into the traces left by the context and general creative tendencies of the period in specific films, and exploring the particularities and influences of the film beyond the typicality of these films. The third part of the study is devoted to film criticism or academic commentary derived from French films on the subject of the Second World War,exploring the reflections and revelations that these films have provoked on social, cultural and ideological levels. This study shows that French WWII films have provided the field of social sciences with new perspectives and material, and have therefore given rise to terms such as "Vichy syndrome" and "mode rétro",and that the legacy of Nazism in images can be seen in them, providing an opportunity for historical films to be evaluated and for the study of history and memory. It also provides a reference for the evaluation of historical films and the treatment of images about history and memory.
