An Experimental Study On The Pragmatic Understanding Of Chinese Possession Relationship Sentences

Through behavioral experiments,this study uses the self-controlled pace reading paradigm to explore the cognitive processing mechanism of the pragmatic meaning of Chinese possession relationship sentences.According to the experimental results of the type of possession relationship,the presence or absence of the "one + quantifier" structural form,and the presence or absence of contextual scenarios,the pragmatic and meaning understanding of Chinese possession relationship sentences,etc.,this research mainly draws the following conclusions:(1)When interpreting Chinese possession relationship sentences,the pragmatic meaning of“own” that matches the owner of the sentence is a prominent and standardized pragmatic meaning.It means the pragmatic meaning of “own” is activated preferentially.However,if there is a conflict with the internal and external information of the current sentence,it will be cancelled,and then further deduced in combination with relevant information to obtain the real possession object.(2)The type of Chinese possession relationship has a certain influence on the understanding of the pragmatic meaning of sentences.The pragmatic prominence of "own" in the possession relationship sentences of whole-part,kinship,and possession-subordination categories gradually weakens,and the uncertainty of the object of ownership gradually increases.There is consistency in the principle of transferability.(3)The structural form of Chinese possession relationship sentences affects the judgment of ownership.The participation of the "one + quantifier" structural factor will lead to a preference for the semantics of "other people’s" in Chinese possession relationship sentences.Relationships are less restrictive than dominant owners and contexts.(4)Context still has a certain influence and effect on the process of judging ownership.When there is a greater correlation between the context and the salient meaning of the possession relationship,it can promote the reasoning and judgment of the possession relationship;otherwise,the listener needs to pay more processing cognitive resources and efforts.(5)In conclusion,the experimental results of this study mainly support that the cognitive mechanism of the meaning of Chinese possessive relation sentences is based on "own" as the salient meaning,that is,the character object at the beginning of the sentence is the owner,and the mode of fulfillment condition restriction influenced by factors such as possession type,sentence structure,and context is more explanatory.
