Cultural studies are very complex and comprehensive, involving theoretical viewpoints in different periods, regions and fields.Britain is an important birthplace of Western cultural studies, born in the 1940 s,John B.Thompson grew up witnessing great changes in western social science, technology, media and social structure.Combining Marxist ideological theory and cultural theory of Frankfurt school and British cultural studies theory, and the cultural theory of Geertz and Bourdieu,John B.Thompson made an innovative interpretation of the media development of modern culture and formed his own theory of modern culture, under the background of mass communication having a great impact on cultural development.Starting from the definition of cultural concept,John B.Thompson proposed the original "structural concept",pointed out that the essential connotation of modern culture should be found in the analysis of the will, routine, structure, relevance and background elements of modern culture, and emphasized the background elements of culture, and innovatively analyzed the production and reception conditions of cultural social background being symbolically copied and the results brought about. He raised the role of mass communication to an important height and summarized the historical change of communication media, the conceptual transformation of transmission characteristics, the social impact of production and interpretation methods in modern culture and media, furthermore, the author made a deep analysis of the ideological implication of modern culture, and tried to clarify the ideological meaning by combining ideology with modern culture and perfected the ideological theory. When specifically analyzing the issues related to modern culture and ideology,John B.Thompson developed the view of cultural hermeneutics. On the premise of the daily cognition of modern culture,John B.Thompson proposed a deep hermeneutic methodological framework consisting of three major parts: society-historical conditional analysis, formal or deductive analysis, and explanation or reinterpretation. It points out the features and functions of hermeneutics in the practical application of modern cultural analysis.John B.Thompson’ s theory of modern culture has profound theoretical value and practical significance. His unique analytical perspective and method provide a new path for us to understand the development of modern culture, which still has profound enlightenment significance for modern society.
