Study On English Translation Of Shaanxi Local Literature From The Perspective Of Manipulation Theory

Shaanxi literature plays an important role in the context of culturally diversity and the strategy of "going out of culture" proposed by the Chinese government.Lu Yao’s Life,based on the urban and rural life in northern Shaanxi during the Reform and Opening up period,tells the life transformation of an educated youth.This novel contains a large number of native Shaanxi dialects.Shaanxi dialect is one of the important carriers of Shaanxi local literature.The English translation of Life was first published in 2019,translated by American Chloe Estep,and published by Seattle Amazon Press.Its publication attracted public attention.This thesis takes Chloe Estep’s English translation as the research object,and analyzes the guding role of manipulation theory on the English translation of Life.In the 1990s,Lefevre put forward the theory of manipulation,he holds that translation is a rewriting of texts under the influence of various cultural backgrounds.It was introduced into China in the 20th century and began to be valued.Manipulation theory breaks the traditional view of translation,from simple code-switching to the transformation of language and cultural context,and analyzes the impact of translation practice activities on factors other than the translated text,such as social culture,historical background,and translator’s initiative,and so on.Manipulation theory provides a new perspective for translation theory research.From the perspective of manipulation theory and under the influence of three manipulated factors,ideology,poetics and patronage,this thesis analyzes the English translation process of Shaanxi local literature through examples,taking the English translation of Life as an example.This thesis mainly studies the following aspects:firstly,it introduces the origin and development of manipulation theory,and clarifies the influence of manipulation theory on literary translation.Then,it sorts out the core factors of the manipulation theory,and on this basis to make a detailed analysis from three aspects:ideology,poetics and patronage.The results of the study show that,on the one hand,the guiding role of manipulation theory in the English translation of Shaanxi local literature.The translation can use translation strategies that are biased towards the target readers.On the other hand,from the perspective of manipulation theory,the research on the English translation of Shaanxi local literature will help target readers to understand Shaanxi literary works,spread Chinese culture,and contribute to Chinese literature going global.
