Focusing on the theme of loneliness, the trauma writing in Richard Yates’ short story Eleven Kinds of Loneliness reveals the various trauma symptoms suffered by traumatized people, showing the life dilemmas faced by lonely people in the context of the times and the contradictory relationship between marginalized people and a highly developed society. This thesis systematically discusses the writing of trauma in Eleven Kinds of Loneliness in three aspects: trauma representation, trauma narrative, and trauma transcendence and recovery. From the perspective of trauma representation, the use of internal and external dual representation not only comprehensively and concretely shows the complex trauma symptoms of different traumatized people, but also explores the potential value of trauma to the text. From the perspective of trauma narrative, the use of free indirect speech and uncertain ending amplifies the painful experience of trauma and adds a sense of reality to the trauma writing. The depiction of extreme loneliness in the book, from the perspective of trauma transcendence, not only showcases the contradiction between individual values and social concepts in capitalist society, but it also reflects the disillusioned people’s attempt to escape from the loneliness dilemma, that is,to transcend the fear of trauma in order to achieve reconciliation and recovery. The significance of this thesis is that the author analyzes the main forms of Richard Yates’ trauma writing and,on this basis, deeply explores the strengthening effect of the application of trauma narrative on the understanding of trauma experience. At the same time, the author recognizes the positive value of Yates’ lonely theme novels and the constructive effort to overcome trauma, transcend trauma, and ultimately reconcile trauma. |
