| Nowadays, the advocacy for quality-oriented education is the direction of educational development.Drama education is an important carrier to achieve the goal of holistic education. The development of drama education in our country is in its infancy. Therefore,a systematic understanding and study of drama education plays an important role in the application of drama education in the teaching of elementary and secondary schools in China, especially in the teaching of foreign languages in elementary and secondary schools. The translation material selected in this report is a pedagogical work on drama education written by Manon Van de Water. This pedagogical work is Drama and Education: Performance Methodologies for Teaching and Learning. It is a textbook that closely connects theory and practice. The book not only introduces the basic concepts of drama education, but also lists corresponding teaching methods, practical applications and evaluation methods. It is a very practice-oriented book that has important trend-setting significance in teaching for educational researchers.Based on Nida’s functional equivalence theory, this translation report analyzes the translation difficulties in the text from the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels through specific translation examples and proposes corresponding translation methods. The report mainly analyzes abstract nouns and noun phrases at the lexical level and adopts the translation methods of specification, subtraction, literal translation and free translation. At the syntactic level, attributive clauses and long sentences are analyzed and translation methods such as fronting and alteration are adopted. At the textual level, the author discusses cohesion and coherence through conversion and addition. After completing the translation, the author notices that the Chinese translation of the work is published while the translation report is being written. This report presents a comparative analysis of the existing translation and the self-translation.Defects in the existing translation are pointed out.The author compares the existing translation and the author’s translation in terms of both semantic correspondence and naturalness of expression and classifies the deficiencies of the existing translation in each aspect. In terms of semantic correspondence, the improper translations of the existing translation include mistranslation, missing information and redundancy of information. In terms of naturalness of expression, the flaws of the existing translation include Europeanized Chinese, inappropriate use of words and unclear logic. The author has adopted corresponding translation methods such as division, adding category words, shift in perspective and realigning sentences in her translation to achieve semantic correspondence and naturalness of expression.Drama education is a newly emerging discipline. The author hopes that this translation practice can provide a reference for the translation of relevant drama education works in China and promote the further development of drama education in elementary and secondary schools in China. |
