| The study, taking some of the most representative words with Chinese characteristics in The Handbook of the Belt and Road as the data for case study, intends to analyze the translation methods of these words with Chinese characteristics in the English version of The Handbook of the Belt and Road, based on Peter Newmark’s theory of semantic translation and communicative translation.Research indicates that the translator employs diverse methods to translate the words with Chinese characteristics based on their own characteristics. The translation methods following semantic translation strategy are as follows: literal translation, componential analysis, synonymy, recognized translation;the translation methods following communicative translation strategy are as follows: functional equivalent, paraphrase, cultural equivalent;the translator also adopts a combination of two translation methods(couplets)based on both strategies in order to achieve a better translation effect, namely, literal translation plus functional equivalent, transference plus notes,through-translation plus notes. The study proves that Newmark’s theory of semantic translation and communicative translation is of guiding significance for the translation research and practice of words with Chinese characteristics. It can also shed light on the translation study of words with Chinese characteristics, help improve the accuracy and adequacy of the English translation with this regard, and promote the going-global of Chinese culture as well. |
