| With the rapid development of modern technology,British and American sci-fi TV series have emerged in a large number since 2010 that explore modern reproduction and parenting such as Assisted reproductive technology(ART)AI powered parenting, genetic technology, etc. The genre reflects on and critiques the development of modern technology and its significant impact on modern society. This paper focuses on British and American sci-fi series from 2010,combining with related theories such as mythic archetype theory, body theory, narratology, feminism to systematically explore the "mother" image and to explore the portrayal of and cultural metaphor behind the "mother" image in these series. The thesis consists of three chapters: The first chapter applies Jungian archetypes theory to sort out and analyze the archetype of the "mother" image. The archetype of the "mother" image exists in the literary and artistic works of all mankind."Mother" image goes beyond national and ethnic boundaries and reflects the collective unconscious that exists in every human heart. The archetype of British and American sci-fi series from 2010 have three orientations: "cute mother","terrible mother" and "cute and terrible mother".The second chapter applies the body theory to explain the physical predicament of "mother".Physical predicament a mother suffers is a key narrative issue in this genre because it is the key carrier of the science fiction imagination. The genre explores how the social power system, like a giant web, captures the mother’s body and alienates it into a tool to be used. The third chapter introduces Claude Bremond’s Structuralist Narratology to make a narrative analysis on the independent stories related to "Mother" and refer these complex stories to each other to discover the core of the story---that is "mother’s search for her child".It is also to identify how the "mother" reconstructs her "self" identity through the journey, and to examine how the journey of " the mother ’s search for her child " opens question and reflection on the future of mankind. |
