| Tragedy is the theme of Mishima Yukio’s works and life. His tragic aesthetic consciousness can be summarized by the two core concepts—death and nihility. For Mishima, death is the active tragedy and the filling of the bright and clear vitality.Such a death is not only the core of the "tragic thing" he yearns for,but also the necessary and sufficient condition to ensure the uniqueness, infinity and eternity of tragedy in his metaphysical tragedy theory.Nihility is the passive tragedy and its meaning can be divided into three layers in the context of Mishima’s works. The first layer refers to the confused and empty, negative and decadent tragic situation of modernity in the post-war society of Japan, the second one is the Nietzschean positive nihilism that can overcome the first layer of nihility and the last layer’s meaning is the ultimately pure and perfect "emptiness" that transcends all values and meanings. This paper tries to interpret mishima’s tragic aesthetic consciousness with the with the help of the thinking paradigm of the aesthetics of tragedy, providing a new way for Mishima Yukio’s research. In addition to the Introduction and Conclusion, this paper consists of the following three chapters:The first chapter of this paper analyzes Mishima’s life experience from the perspective of psychology and sociology. It explores the origin of Mishima’s view of death and nihility in combination with family, society, times and other background factors and summarizes the formation of his tragic aesthetic consciousness. The second chapter takes Mishima’s specific artistic texts as the object, including important literary texts as well as non-literary texts such as plays, films and photography books,to interpret the artistic presentation of his tragic aesthetic consciousness respectively from the aspects of classical tragic death and modern tragic nihility respectively. And further analyzes the two choices of escape and martyrdom made by Mishima in the face of tragedy. The third chapter continues to question Mishima Yukio’s tragic value. It summarizes his unique interpretation of tragedy ontology and discusses the value and significance of tragic art and tragic aesthetics theory in the modern spiritual dilemma of nihility,as well as its healing function for the disease of human spiritual desolation. |
