There have been numerous literary rewrites of the story of "White Snake" since its establishment.When dealing with the same material,different treatments and different textual presentations can reflect changes in the narrative mode.Taking the modern(1919-1949)rewritten text of the story of the White Snake as a model,we dig deeper into the narrative strategies of the rewritten literary classics during the modern transition period from the perspective of narratology,and the summary analysis of such rewriting strategies is of great value for contemporary literary creation.In addition,it is also important to explore the motives behind the rewriting from the narrative text,in order to deeply grasp the author’s rewriting behavior.However,studies on the White Snake biography have focused on the formative and augmentative periods of the story,with less attention paid to modern rewriting of the text.Therefore,the use of narratology and social-historical criticism to examine the rewriting strategies of the modern creators of the "White Snake Legend" is complementary to the overall study of the literary narrative of the White Snake.In a linear decomposition of the story of the White Snake,the most primitive and simple story is that the White Snake transforms into a human being and marries a man.The core element of the story,the White Snake,is retained,and the linear structure is stripped away.Although the image of the snake transformed into a human being exists in earlier narrative works,it is highly substitutable.In the process of finalizing the tale,Feng Menglong transformed the folk narrative into a literati narrative.In terms of content,he broke through the psychological convention of equating fictional narrative discourse with reality and consciously sought reality with fiction;in terms of language,he combined the contextual nature of folk narrative discourse and added lyricism,making the language more rhythmic and elegant.In addition,when adapting the novel for the stage,the length of the performance is taken into consideration,and the illusory plot is cut down to make the story closer to reality;the characterization of the characters is condensed and coalesced in one direction to portray a typological characterization.In the modern rewriting of the narrative model of "The White Snake",the creator needs to maintain the reader’s familiarity in the rewriting,but also needs to set up textual barriers in various ways to prolong the reader’s comprehension process.The rewriting of the story is examined in terms of both plot and character.On the one hand,in terms of plot arrangement,rewriting mostly starts from the original story’s sketchy plot,passing over the familiar plot in the form of dialogue,extending and supplementing the non-core function of the original to form a functional change in the storyline,abandoning the simple sequence of cause-passage-result.On the other hand,in the treatment of the characters,the more distinctive characteristics of the characters are retained,and more complex and three-dimensional shaping is carried out to highlight the psychological characteristics of the characters.On the one hand,the narrative form changes the omniscient perspective and adopts more limited narrative,which shortens the distance between the characters and the readers through internally focused narrative,fully reveals the inner world of the characters,and fully expresses the conflict of the characters’ minds;on the other hand,in modern rewriting,the creators often use the dialogue of
