This report is based on the translation practice of Chapter 8 of Subversion and Sympathy.Since the source text is legal literature criticism, the scope of its target readers is relatively narrow. The author tends to omit literary or legal knowledge in the source text. Therefore, major translation difficulties are caused by default. This report can be divided into four parts.Firstly,it introduces the background of law and literature, and further demonstrates the significance of this report,in this part,it is found that paratext plays an important role in solving default;Secondly,it points out the text features and translation difficulties. What’s more,it demonstrates that the translator shall have critical thinking in the whole process of translation.Thirdly, the main part of this report is comparative case analysis based on critical thinking, seeking to make a balance between annotation(or addition)and shift.Although there is no doubt that both annotation and shift contribute to solving default, how to make a choice between them has always been ignored. In this report, cultural default and contextual default are demonstrated in detail respectively. Finally, this report concludes the major findings in this translation practice, hoping that it may be helpful to legal literature translation.
