This translation report is based on the translation practice from chapters 5 to 7 of The Age of Wood: Our Most Useful Material and the Construction of Civilization.This text was written by Roland Ennos and published by Scribner Press in December2020.The book consists of four parts,fifteen chapters.It is a popular English book about wood,discussing the important role of wood in human civilization,showing the trees how to promote the progress of civilization,revealing the issue on human overuse of resources and the environmental and energy problems we are facing.It also narrates the history of wood to promote the construction of human civilization,which has practical guiding significance for the healthy development of society.The popular science text contains a large number of long complex sentences and some abstract nouns.Due to the differences in sentence structure and composition between Chinese and English,translator used part-of-speech conversion,embedding,abstract noun concretization and reversing translation method to translate the original text,and strived to the translation be fluent and faithful to the original text.The translator selected typical abstract nouns and long complex sentences as translation examples.The translator further enhances the level of knowledge by this translation practice.Moreover,this practice is co-translation,which also improves the translator’s sense of cooperation.At the same time,in this process of translation,the translator also found many weakness of translation ability.In the future,translator should continue to learn translation skills to lay a solid foundation for future translation practice.
