A Translation Practice Report On Paper Wife

The translation materials of the practice are chapters 1,2 and 6 of Paper Wife,a novel by American writer Laila Ibrahim published in 2018.The novel tells the story of Mei Ling,who took the place of her sister and married a Gam Saan Haak as a paper wife.She experienced the pain in the process of immigrating to the United States and finally achieved a successful life.The first two chapters are about the heroine’s marriage,and the background of the story is introduced with a lot of dialogues and psychological activities.The sixth chapter describes the heroine’s experience on the transoceanic cruise,telling the hardships of immigration and the differences between Chinese and American cultures.Paper Wife interweaves Chinese traditional culture and its interpretation by the author who write in a different language.The origination and development of the story is based on Chinese culture and history.These factors make the translation practice of Paper Wife should not only undertake the function of cultural translation,pay attention to the dual conversion of language and culture,but also correct the author’s misunderstanding of Chinese culture.With the guidance of Hans Vermeer’s Skopos Theory,the practice report discusses and analyzes the translation strategies and techniques of hybrid,Chinese culture-specific terms and cultural misunderstanding in source text.It is found that neither domestication nor foreignization alone can solve these kinds of problems in translation practice.Only by comprehensively applying domestication and foreignization to each kind of problems can the quality of translation be guaranteed according to the translation purpose and the principles of intralingual coherence and interlingual coherence.Through the translation practice of Paper Wife,it is found that the expected translation effect can be achieved by adopting appropriate translation methods and skills after the purpose of translation is established.Skopos Theory can not only guide the translation of literary works related to culture back-translation,but also give inspiration to translators when the translation is in a deadlock.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 36...
