On The Chinese Translation Of Cultural Heterogeneity Based On Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion

Based on Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion,this paper studies the cultural heterogeneity in Ruan Jinglin’s version of The Painted Veil.The paper introduces Hermeneutic Motion in detail,and also makes a reasonable explanation for applying Hermeneutic Motion in analyzing the translation of cultural heterogeneity from the perspectives of four steps respectively.The author then discusses the demonstration of Hermeneutic Motion in the translation of cultural heterogeneity in The Painted Veil.Trust showed in the sub-texts(including the preface and the postscript)gets studied.First,the author pays attention to the editorial board and readers that influence translation,too.Second,the process of Ruan’s aggression,the methods he takes and their effect are analyzed from the hermeneutic perspective with examples.Third,in the step of incorporation,Ruan’s translation strategies are divided into foreignization and domestication.This part also foregrounds the factors affecting the selection of strategies and the effect of translation.Fourth,the part of compensation discusses how the translator effectively compensates the unbalanced cultural heterogeneity on both linguistic and cultural levels.This study finds three reasons for the difficulties in the translation of cultural heterogeneity,that is,1)no counterpart in target language,2)time factor leading to the change of cultural heterogeneity and 3)translator’s lack of cultural accumulation.The author also points out the different challenges in translating different cultures,for example,cultural heterogeneity throughout the whole novel is trickier.Finally,four effective methods and two suggestions are proposed.This study explores the possibility of applying Hermeneutic Motion to the study of cultural heterogeneity and tries to provide some suggestions for future translation and research of cultural heterogeneity.
