In September 2014,the illegal “Occupy Central” incident broke out in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, which not only jeopardized the peaceful and tranquil life of seven million Hong Kong citizens, but also seriously undermined the stability of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and its external image. This thesis takes Gamson’s Interpretive Package Theory as the theoretical basis, and takes the news transedition of the illegal “Occupy Central” incident that took place in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China in September 2014 as the research object. The Chinese and English versions of news from Xinhua News Agency was selected as the sample source to analyze and compare on the “Occupy Central” from September 28,2014 to October 28,2014.The purpose of this thesis is to answer three main questions: the thematic frames used in the Chinese and English reports on “Occupy Central”;the differences between the frames of the Chinese and English reports and the cultural significance of the frames. This study is expected to make contributions to translation studies and media external communication studies from a new perspective by studying the ChineseEnglish translation of online media news,in the hope of providing some references for Chinese media on further improving external communication ability on the basis of understanding how to build a news frame. The study found that Xinhuanet’s coverage of “Occupy Central” in Hong Kong has constructed the following frames: “Illegal Activities”,“People call for peace and stability”,“One Country,Two Systems” and “‘Occupy Central’ is organized and premeditated”.On this basis, the thesis further analyses the framing devices and reasoning devices of the four packages quantitatively and qualitatively, and compares the differences between the Chinese and English reports. The thesis argues that the root causes affecting the differences in framing devices and textual differences between Chinese and English reports are the different audiences of Chinese and English reports and the fact that Xinhuanet,as a central-level media,is responsible for the country’s international communication. Therefore, through the comparative analysis of the Chinese and English news reports of Xinhuanet, this paper argues that in the future, media workers should start from the differences of news communication, improve the quality of content, and their own communication power and influence while improving the ability to proactively set the frame and strengthen the discourse.
