Sports training has a promoting effect on cognitive processing.Compared with non-athletes,athletes have a cognitive advantage in sports-specific information processing, which has been confirmed by relevant studies at the level of consciousness and unconsciousness. However, there have been few studies on the differences in cognitive processing for general information between these two groups of people, especially when it comes to high-level semantic processing.Whether athlete’s processing of general information can reach the level of unconscious semantics, whether there is still a processing advantage is still unknown. In addition, previous studies mostly discussed the cognitive differences between athletes and non-athletes from a single level of consciousness or unconsciousness, but few people have combined the two to explore in which level of consciousness can better reflect this advantage. Also, whether athletes have the specificity of unconscious processing of sport-specific information has not been found.Based on this, this study takes the activation diffusion model as the theoretical guide, takes table tennis players and ordinary college students as the experimental objects, selects pictures and texts of general information and sports-specific information as stimulus materials, adopts masking semantic priming paradigm, and uses event-related potential technology to explore the cognitive processing differences of table tennis players and ordinary college students in both suprathreshold and subthreshold,as well as the unconscious processing specificity of athletes themselves for different information types. It was found that:(1)Under the condition of conscious, the semantic processing of general information in the expert group was better than that in the control group, which showed shorter response time and higher accuracy. In addition, both of them showed significant semantic priming. However, there was no significant difference of the priming amount in two groups.(2)Under unconscious conditions, only the expert group showed significant semantic priming and N400 effect, while the control group did not show semantic priming and N400 effect, and the amount of priming in the expert group was significantly greater than that in the control group;(3)By comparing the differences in the processing of general information and special information,it was found that although the experts still showed significant semantic priming and N400 effect, they did not show the specificity of unconscious semantic processing of special information.Conclusions:(1)compared with ordinary college students, table tennis players still have cognitive advantages in the processing of general information;(2)unconscious perception can reach the level of semantic processing, behavioral evidence is the occurrence of unconscious semantic priming effect, and electrophysiological evidence is the emergence of N400 effect;(3)Compared with conscious condition, table tennis players show greater cognitive processing advantages under unconscious condition;(4)in unconscious semantic processing, table tennis players have not found the processing specificity of special information.
