As social development progresses, family education is becoming more important and more attention has been paid to conflicts between parents and adolescents in Chinese families. The study of parent-child conflict talks is crucial for resolving parent-child contradictions and building harmonious family relationships. This research selects parent-child conflict talks in urban families from 15 seasons of the reality show "X-change" as the research materials and analyzes them using a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods. The study employs office software to statistically classify the collected parent-child conflict talks;and then, based on conversation analysis analyzing parent-child conflict talks during adolescence in Chinese families to classify the topic types causing conflicts.Next,it investigates the causes of conflicts by combining Maslow’s hierarchy of needs from psychology;finally,it uses SPSS tools and Chi-square test algorithms to conduct the correlation analysis, exploring the usage and features of linguistic strategies. The research finds that:first, there are eight recurring topics in domestic parent-child conflict talks, with "Caretaking," "Money/Consumption," and "Physical Space" being the most common.Second, the generation of conflict talks primarily stems from the violation of each other’s safety, love and belongingness, and esteem needs during their communication.Additionally, parents sometimes violate their children’s physiological and aesthetic needs.Third, the strategies of conflict talks are divided into two categories:initial opposition strategies and response strategies. The former includes"Direct No," "Indirect No," "Justification," "Alternative," "Delay," and "Question,"where conflicts may likely end when employing "Direct No" and "Delay" strategies. The latter encompasses 21 strategies, among which "The Third Party," "Submission," and"Evasion" are the most effective in terminating conflict talks.Chi-square tests reveal that following the use of a "Request for Explanation",a "Request for Explanation" is likely to ensue;adopting "Physical Force" leads to retaliation from the other party;and the"Threat" triggers "Provocation" or "The Third Party" from the other participant, with the intervention likely ending the conversation. However, when opponents adopt the"Counter" strategy, they are least likely to receive "Rejection" as a response.Fourth,parent-child conflict talks also follow turn-taking rules, specifying the next speaker through direct name-calling,pronouns,etc.When answering questions, they tend to use dispreferred answers, often causing displeasure in the other party. This research takes quantitative and qualitative analysis methods to explore topic types, the causes, and linguistic strategies and features of parent-child conflict talks from both linguistic and psychological perspectives. It is a new perspective to combine quantitative and qualitative research methods in studying the conflict talks between parents and their adolescent children. The findings of this research also provide assistance for smooth communication between parents and children, reducing conflict talks, and ultimately building a harmonious family atmosphere.
