| Since the success of Beijing Olympics in 2008,English sports news has gained increasing attention from researchers.It was found that scholars have concentrated on the stylistic features on sports news but few studies were on attitude,opinions and stance.Literature of contrastive analysis in cross linguistic sports news was even scarce.Thus,drawing on Appraisal Theory,this thesis attempts to contrast the attitudinal resources of 2020 Tokyo Olympics between Chinese and American media.Based on the Attitude system in Appraisal Theory,this study selected 78 relevant pieces of Tokyo Olympics news from People’s Daily and USA Today as the corpora.The thesis first used UAM Corpus Tool to manually annotate the attitudinal resources according to a tailored scheme based on AT.It then conducted a contrastive analysis of the attitudinal resources from the subcategories of Affect,Judgment and Appreciation and explored how these resources realized the attitudinal meaning and the reasons behind these phenomenon in the purpose of untangling the writing techniques and attitudinal features in the corpora.It was found that the attitudinal distribution was imbalanced in two corpora.Macroscopically,Chinese and American newspaper expressed their attitudinal meaning towards Tokyo Olympics and their athletes with the employment of Affect,Judgment and Appreciation.The abundance of Judgment and Appreciation served to depict and appraise the athletes’ performances,events competition and results.The positivity from two newspapers indicated that both sides held a positive attitude towards the Tokyo Olympics and their athlete delegations.Microscopically,1)American newspaper prefer deploying proportional non-authorial Affect to enhance the objectivity in their news.2)Chinese media’s favor over Tenacity indicated that the media focused more on spreading the national spirit of tenacity in society.3)The overt deployment in social-valuation from Chinese corpora showed that Chinese sports news reportage paid more attention to the social significance of sports news.These results can lie in various factors like specificity of sports news,social and cultural values ans news systems.Based on the Attitude system,this study verified the applicability of Attitude system for the genre of sports news genre.It was hoped that this study could enlarge the research scope of Attitude system of Appraisal Theory and could provide some insights for the international sports reportage in China. |
