Gu Tinglong(1904-1998)was a scholar who had made certain achievements in many fields such as calligraphy,epigraphy,editions,catalogs and so on.His calligraphy was inherited from his family in his early years,and then immersed in the study of ancient characters and copying ancient books.After years of hard work,he achieved considerable success.This article introduces Gu Tinglong’s life and social circle,and summarizes his situation in calligraphy and calligraphy theory,philology,epigraphy and cataloging research,striving to objectively present Gu’s calligraphy art and his calligraphy theory.Gu Tinglong has profound knowledge in philology and epigraphy,which benefits his calligraphy.Based on “the study of roots”,his calligraphy level is guaranteed1.Through the study of Gu Tinglong’s calligraphy and academic achievements,it can also be understood that the overview of the calligraphy of scholars in the Republic of China.This article discusses Gu Tinglong’s calligraphy in four chapters: The first chapter briefly introduces Gu Tinglong’s life and calligraphy activities,understands the profound family learning of Wei Ting Gu’s family,the process of Gu Tinglong’s interaction with other scholars,analyzes the positive impact of these factors on Gu’s calligraphy and calligraphy theory formation;The second chapter summarizes Gu Tinglong’s calligraphy theory,clarifies his “practicality first” calligraphy concept,analyzes Gu’s calligraphy practice,summarizes its characteristics and causes of skillful simplicity,firmness and elegance;The third chapter organizes Gu Tinglong’s achievements in philology,epigraphy and cataloging research,which are solid guarantees for Gu’s calligraphy level;The fourth chapter analyzes the inspiration of Gu Tinglong’s calligraphy for contemporary scholars’ calligraphy creation.
