The Wen Shi Tong Yi is a vast and profound text with many researchers.Based on the research results of previous authors, this paper systematically discusses the connotation of the concept of essay in Wen Shi Tong Yi,the genre of essay, the creation of essay, and the influence on later generations. The text is divided into six parts:Introduction, which summarizes the basis for the selection of the topic, the current status of the research on this topic, the research method and the innovation of this paper. The first chapter,“The Ideological Origins of the Essay Concepts of Wen Shi Tong Yi”,the formation process of the essay concepts of Wen Shi Tong Yi is discussed from two aspects: the formation of the concepts and the inheritance and change of the ideas.Influenced by family traditions and travel experiences,Zhang Xuecheng establishes the essay concept that essay research should seek its meaning and the commonality between the ancient and now,and traces the origin of the birth of essays and the course of changes with the research method of proofreading, finding that essays were originally based on the rites and music of the former kings, and experienced three important development nodes: the essays of the Six Classics, the essays of the Warring States, and the essays of the Wenji. The second chapter,“The Connotation of ‘Wen’ in Wen Shi Tong Yi”,explores the meaning of articles in Wen Shi Tong Yi from two levels: the definition of “articles”and the relationship between articles and Tao and history.Zhang Xue-cheng,following the words of his ancestors, refers to all rhetorical and thoughtful writings and books as “essays” and establishes the concept of essays in a broad sense,on the basis of which he advocates that essays should take on the task of speaking the way and reaching the righteousness of the world. The third chapter,“Wen Shi Tong Yi on the Genre of ‘Literature’”,elaborates on the concept of articles in Zhang Xue Cheng’s theory of literary genre from two levels:the classification of genres and the discussion of poetry,fu,and guwen. In “General Theory of Literature and History”,Zhang Xue Cheng proposes that the study of essay genre should first be based on the original use of the essay to determine its genre. On this basis, poetry and fugue are given priority to irony, and ancient literature is given priority to the example of clear and true meaning. The fourth chapter,“Wen Shi Tong Yi on the Creation of ‘Literature’”,elaborates on the reflection of the concept of the article in Zhang Xuecheng’s theory of creation from three levels, namely, the purpose of writing, the intention of the article, and the creation of words.Firstly, the creation of articles must be useful to the society,to establish words for the public, and to be useful to the world;secondly,to ensure that the contents of the articles are true and credible, and to be respectful before the articles;at the same time, the writing should be united with virtue, and the words should be reasonable. The fifth chapter,“The Influence of the Concepts of Wen Shi Tong Yi on Later Times”,explores the influence of Wen Shi Tong Yi on the understanding of the relationship between literature and history by literati in the late Qing Dynasty and the reorganization of the flow of articles by scholars in the Republic of China. The“General Theory of Literature and History” influenced scholars’ conceptions of literature and history at the end of the Qing Dynasty with its conceptions of the essay as both historical and practical. In the Republic of China, scholars re-examined the traditional academic system from a Western perspective, and the concept of the essay in Wen Shi Tong Yi took on new vigor in the intersection of Western studies and traditional scholarship. The essays mentioned in Wen Shi Tong Yi are compatible with literary theory, historical thought and the concept of Taoism, reflecting Zhang Xue Cheng’s profound understanding and precise grasp of the essence of the essays.
