As a fundamental factor in the Core Literacy of English Subject,the improvement of English language competence is not only related to the cultivation of Core Literacy of English Subject,but also related to the realization of the fundamental task of establishing moral education for people.It become an become an important issue in English education research to How to promote the development of English language competence in high school students.In this study,questionnaires and interviews were used to investigate the current situation and influencing factors the English language competence of high school students.A total of 236 students were selected for the questionnaire survey,8 students and 3 teachers were selected for the interview.The study is divided into the following main sections.The first part is the introduction.This part includes the rationales for the selection of the topic,definition of the concept,research design and literature review that is providing a detailed description of national and international research on language competence.The second part is a survey and analysis of the current English language competence of high school students.The study is based on relevant literature and interviews,and has been revised several times,resulting in a questionnaire with good reliability and validity.The study focuses on four areas:language comprehension,language expression,language awareness and language sense.The questionnaire survey was conducted to find out the current level of English language competence of high school students and the differences in their English language competence under different background variables.The third part is the analysis of influencing factors of high school students’ English language competence.Based on the available literature and interviews,five influencing factors were screened out: language knowledge,language attitudes,language learning strategies,teacher-student language interaction,and parental support.This study uses multiple linear regression to explore the relationship between English language competence and five influencing factors,and provides further in-depth analysis of the influencing factors.The fourth part presents suggestions and strategies for improving the English language competence of high school students.The fifth part is the summary and outlook,which mainly summarizes the study and suggests improvements to the follow-up study.The results of this study show that: Firstly,the high school students have attained level of English language competence as set out in the curriculum.The development of the dimensions within English language competence is uneven.The language awareness dimension has the highest mean self-assessment value,followed by the language comprehension dimension,the language expression dimension and the the language sense dimension.Secondly,there are differences in English language competence among high school students with different background variables.Thirdly,multiple factors affect the English language competence of high school students.Based on the analysis of the status and influencing factors,combined with the interview results and relevant literature,this study proposes strategies to improve the English language competence of high school students in five aspects.Firstly,to promote language interaction between teachers and students and increases opportunities for students to understand and express themselves in English..Secondly,to build positive language attitudes and increase students’ cultural awareness of English.Thirdly,to master language learning strategies and improve the effectiveness of English comprehension.Fourthly,to accumulate language knowledge and consolidate the foundation for English language competence improvement.Fifthly,to create a listening and speaking atmosphere at home to promote students’ English language learning.
