A Report On Chinese Translation Of Snapshots Of The Mind(Chapter3)

Snapshots of the Mind is the masterpiece of the renowned American cognitive psychologist Gary Klein.It was first published in 2022.It provides practical tools to escape reliance on initial intuition and learn to discover the way people make decisions,assess situations,detect anomalies and anticipate problems.The original text consists of nine chapters,and I have translated the third chapter.This report is based on translation of Chapter 3 Rationalist Fever Dreams.The selected chapter contains 15,539 words.The chapter is written with logical and abstract language,using vocabulary from the cognitive domain and long,complicated sentences,which pose challenges to translation.These problems are solved under the guidance of general translation criteria of "xin da ya",or faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance.Under the guidance of "xin da ya",this report analyzes the difficulties encountered in translation from three levels:lexical,syntactic and rhetorical.At the lexical level,semantic amplification and contextual amplification are used to make the translation faithful and expressive.At the syntactic level,word class conversion,voice conversion,division are used.At the rhetorical level,four-character idioms are used to enhance rhetorical effect and achieve elegance of expression.It argues that a combination of these techniques can enhance faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance of the translation.This translation practice reveals that "xin da ya" is the constant criterion of translation.Appropriate translation methods should be combined to ensure that the translation is faithful,expressive and elegant at the same time.The author hopes this translation practice can provide some reference for the translation of cognitive psychological texts.
