| American writer Khaled Hosseini published his maiden work The Kite Runner in2003,which caused a great sensation in the academic circle and was warmly praised by the majority of young readers. Therefore,Khaled Hosseini himself was called the biggest dark horse in the international literary circle in recent years.Due to hosseini’s multiple identities, the current domestic academic research on hosseini’s works mostly focuses on cultural identity, war background and character image, while the research on narrative art is a little weak.Influenced by the structural factors such as characters and plots in traditional Poetics, many scholars focus on the single narrative movement of the explicit plots in literary works and ignore the hidden undercurrent behind the narrative. This paper attempts to make an in-depth analysis of the Kite Runner by covert process of professor Shen Dan as the theoretical guidance and the related concepts in Gennette’s narrative discourse and Booth’s and Phelan’s rhetorical narrative as the theoretical supplement.By exploring the narrative characters, narrative perspectives and narrative strategies in narrative communication, this paper aims to analyze the dual narrative process existing in each part of the novel. The thesis is mainly composed of three parts.Firstly, the introduction part introduces the basis of the topic selection, shows the research status of the novel "The Kite Runner",and explains the value and significance of this research. The text is divided into three chapters:The first chapter mainly discusses the dual images of the narrative characters in the Kite Runner.Through the careful reading of the characters of Hassan, father and Assef in the novel, this paper excavates the hidden images at the beginning, middle and end of the novel, and discusses the topics such as personal choice and national character implied in the dual images of the characters. The second chapter analyzes the dual influence of narrative undercurrent on narrative focus.Through Amir’s focus on different characters, the author’s cognition of different characters’ events between "watching" and "being seen" in the narration is discussed.Based on the theory of "others",this paper clarifies the inner connection between Afghans and Westerners, and expounds the deconstruction of national values by "others" culture. The third chapter focuses on the dialogue and irony among the narrator, reader and author in narrative communication. From the unreliable narration of the implied author and Amir, the implied author and the real author and the narrative judgment, this paper excavates the double narrative tension in the works and further discusses the author’s creative motivation and strategy. The conclusion part summarizes the whole text and reveals the unique narrative strategy and artistic value of the Kite Runner from the perspective of dual narrative process. |
