| William Faulkner(September 25,1897-July 6,1962),an American modernist writer,won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949.His novels have rich connotations,exquisite language,superb narrative skills,and are adept at cleverly using time and word order.The images used are numerous and intertwined.All these pose a great challenge for translators,but also provides rich explanatory space for Chinese translation and interpretation.His short story "Dry September" is one of Faulkner’s finest stories.The novel revolves around the killing of Will,a black man,but the actual killing plot is omitted,so as to highlight the atmosphere of the drought disaster.And it deeply exposes the various twisted and suppressed mental illnesses of southern people,such as hunger,thirst,impulse,and frenzy,behind the old southern customs and cultural biases.Translation is also elaborating,and different translation details reflect different translator’s unique understanding of the original work.This thesis is the first attempt to systematically study several Chinese translations of“Dry September”,and it is also the first attempt to interpret its ideological theme from the perspective of cross-cultural literary interpretation.This paper takes six Chinese translations——Yang Xiaoshi’s,Tao Jie’s,Zhang Helong’s,Ye Zi’s,Cui Zining’s and Li Jidang’s as the research objects.Based on the relevant research at home and abroad,this paper focuses on the presentation of the drought theme of the original work,and takes Faulkner’s other works and the social background at that time as the auxiliary.By comparing and analyzing the detailed text differences presented by each translation when translating the "dry" theme of the original English work,the rich Chinese interpretation space is elucidated.This thesis consists of five parts.The introduction part introduces the content and creation background of "Dry September",and gives a brief overview of the research on the original work and related Chinese translations,so as to clarify the significance of the topic,research purpose and research ideas.The first chapter focuses on the writing of the original "drought" situation,around the time line of Will’s violence,according to the three stages before,during and after the violence,it focuses on the key words and sentences of the original description of the drought situation,compares the differences in meaning when the translation presents the atmosphere of the original situation,and tries to analyze and discuss the various possibilities and limitations of the Chinese interpretation.The second chapter focuses on the description of the original "dry-hot" characters,focusing on the "dry-hot" symptoms of Minnie and her neighbors,McLendon and her followers,and compares and analyzes the different translations of Minnie’s "dry-hot"temperament,the viciousness and hypocrisy of her neighbors,McLendon’s ruthlessness and power,and the followers’fanaticism and paranoia.The different presentations of the symptoms of the disease.The third chapter focuses on the different translation understandings of the original title,focusing on the different interpretations of the theme of the novel "dry" by scholars at home and abroad,and analyzes the rich interpretation space opened by the different translation methods of“dry" such as“干旱”,“干燥”and“干热”.The conclusion part summarizes the full text,and briefly summarizes the translation characteristics and translation tendencies of the six translations from the two aspects of the theme of the original work and the language characteristics of the translation,with a view to opening up as a whole the many difficulties and possibilities in the translation and interpretation of Faulkner’s implicit and subtle "dry" intention in the Chinese world. |
