The original text for this report is Chapter 5 of The Palgrave Handbook of Linguistic(Im)politeness,which is edited by Jim O ’Driscoll.This chapter focuses on the relationship between face and(im)politeness,arguing that face involves the interpersonal behavior of maintaining face and threatening face,which is the cause and result of communication.The chapter also points out the concept of face,face behavior and seven features of face in the article.The original text is a pragmatic academic discourse with many professional terms and relatively complex sentence structures.According to the characteristics,combining such translation strategies as transposition and omission,the translator starts with the academic titles,the focus of information and the spacing structures—the original academic titles are translated into centralization structures,nominalization structures and titles containing dashes;the focus of information is translated into pragmatic terms,components in quotation marks,complete information after expansion and four-word constructions respectively;the spacing structures are translated into initial elements,recombination structures and supplementary elements respectively,so as to further analyze how to use appropriate translation to achieve semantic and pragmatic equivalence.Through this translation practise,the translator is acutely aware of the significance of gaining a thorough understanding of the source material,the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical application,and the ongoing refinement and enhancement of the translated content.It is hoped that this report can provide foreign cutting-edge research methods for domestic pragmatics researchers,spread the innovative research findings of predecessors,and provide reference for the translation of relevant texts in China.
