A figure lacking in domestic scholarship,Reginald Pole was an English archbishop and cardinal under Mary I.As a highly controversial ruler,Mary I’s religious policy, often seen in English historical studies as an old force that hindered the development of the English nation, was bound to fail. And it was Poe who dominated the religious policy of this period. The labels reactionary, restoration, conservative, and cruel are often used to describe the religious movements of this period. It is also called the Counter-Reformation because of its adherence to Catholic traditions such as the Roman papacy, which Protestantism opposed. This paper accepts the early modern paradigm of understanding both Catholic and Protestant religious change as part of the Reformation movement in early modern history, and refers the term CounterReformation specifically to the path of ecclesiastical restoration chosen by early modern Catholicism. The question of this paper is:What did the Counter-Reformation look like in Pole? Was it a simple and brutal restoration of the old religion? This article attempts to answer this question by examining Pole’s Counter-Reformation only. The article is divided into five parts. The introductory section introduces the research overview at home and abroad, the different Reformation paradigms that have influenced Pole’s research. It also introduces the purpose and ideas of the study. The first chapter begins with an introduction to Pole’s person and his counterReformation ideas. There are few domestic studies of Pole, and it is necessary to give a brief introduction to him. This is followed by an understanding of the ideal church pattern envisioned by Pole through his works, which includes three elements:the Roman pope, the separation of church and state, and the dutifulness of the clergy. The second two chapters are Poe’s efforts to achieve this, divided into two parts:Catholic Restoration and Church Reform. The second chapter deals with the restoration of Catholicism.Through his own efforts,Pole reconciled England with the Rome, and at the same time restored the independence of the Church and the regime after his return to England. The two parts of his ideal Catholic Church were realized. The third chapter is about the reformation of the Church. The final part of the ideal Catholicism was to address the issue of clerical malpractice.Through the London Synod, one can understand Pole’s thought process for achieving clergy due diligence. Finally,a concrete example is used to demonstrate that Pole’s Counter-Reformation is a Self-consistent system, clear in its thinking, and concrete and feasible. Conclusion:Pole’s Counter-Reformation was a purposeful, systematic, operational and rational action, not simple and brutal as traditionally understood, and at its core is precisely the insistence on the unity of the Church. The possibility of its failure was mainly due to the lack of time and Elizabeth’s wishy-washy religious policy. But the idea of his ecclesiastical reform was clear and feasible, and it would work.
