Fredric Jameson,born in April 1934 in Cleveland,USA,is the most influential contemporary critic of Marxist theory in the United States.He first studied at Harvard University and later received his master’s degree and doctorate from Yale University.After completing his studies,he taught at Harvard University.After 1967,he served as a professor at the University of California and Yale University.He came to Duke University in 1986 as a chair professor.In Jameson’s research career,his theory of popular culture is one of the indispensable representative forms in the development of postmodern thought,and his theory is of great significance.Jameson comprehensively and incisively analyzed capitalist culture from an ideological point of view,that is,to explore the practical problems behind capitalism from the perspectives of culture,politics,and economics.His ideas and theories are extensive and complex,which are worthy of our absorption and reference.Jameson’s theoretical system is characterized by being large and thoughtful.His theories cover a wide range and rich connotations,forming a pluralistic theoretical system under the overall ideology with Marxism as the basic position and the spirit of dialectical criticism running throughout.Jameson has always adhered to the Marxist position in theoretical exposition,paying attention to social reality and the latest trend of cultural development.In the face of various emerging phenomena in the social and cultural field of contemporary capitalism,Jameson reveals the ideological face of contemporary capitalist culture.He uses Marxist hermeneutics as a weapon of analysis and criticism,pointing out the ideological nature of contemporary capital cultural texts.With the materialist view of history as the core,the development of capitalist culture is divided into three periods:realism,modernism and postmodernism,and thus the ideological outlook of mass culture is analyzed.Finally,taking historical materialism as the basic perspective and method,this paper analyzes and criticizes the cultural phenomena of contemporary capitalist society such as mass culture,consumerist culture and cultural globalization,and puts forward the solution strategy of "cognitive mapping" in order to solve the cultural and ideological dilemma of contemporary capitalism.
