This thesis is an English-Chinese consecutive interpreting simulation report based on the High-level Thematic Debate of the 76th United Nation General Assembly:Moment for Nature, the content of which is to call for international cooperation to respond to global environmental crises. This thesis analyzes the problems encountered during the simulative interpreting practice, and proposes relevant strategies in response to these challenges according to Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory. The thesis first introduces the interpreting task, including the background and the procedure of the conference. Then it describes in detail the specific process of the whole task, including pre-interpreting preparation, description of the interpreting activity, and post-interpreting assessment. The phase of pre-interpreting preparation consists of three parts:the glossary, relevant knowledge and accent, while post-interpreting assessment is a comment on the limitation and shortcomings of the previous two phases. The main body of the thesis begins with an introduction of the lexical and syntactic equivalence from Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.Afterwards, problems encountered are discussed separately through case analysis.Problems related to lexical equivalence appear in such aspects as:inappropriate handling of idioms and metaphors, which require semantic adjustment, and the need for redundancy adjustment, including making analytical adjustment by adding“category words”in target language,i.e.,Chinese,or synthetic adjustment by compressing redundant translation. On syntactic equivalence, one of the major problems is the improper interpretation of long sentences. In this regard, unnatural word order in the TL(target language)shall be disposed of with the method of reversion, while division should be used to eliminate redundant syntactic structure in the TL.Also, there is the problem with handling with passive sentences in English, and the methods are to transform them into active ones,or pseudo passive ones. With the measures taken above, adapted versions are provided so that the interpretations are more natural in both the lexical and syntactic levels to achieve Functional Equivalence.
